Most worthless plot device

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

What would you say is the most worthless plot device in anime or manga, used by more than one series?

If it's a spoiler contained within say what series so people know to avoid it as this is the anime section :p

I would say above all else "character x has a random unexplained disease that weakens them or would kill them later on anyway"
Typically thrust upon bad guys as a means to kill them or legitify their actions somewhat.

How about when a character reveals that they've been intimately involved with events that occurred before they were introduced or even conceived of (by the author).

I just think it's a really lame thing to throw in there, it's fine if it has some background like at least the disease having been mentioned in the series and then later on surprise this dude has it.

I've never seen that approach.

However it can also be bad if they start off with the disease but it juuust so happens to kill them in a climactic moment like the disease knew how to be dramatic or something

What about in the case of a character like As***aka? I think it's a good device if used properly.

Yeah that's a great example of where it works.

I don't think it quite counts as a device in that situation. If I recall, it was central to the plot, rather than thrown in for no real reason.

A plot device is "anything that moves the plot forward". There isn't an inherent negative connotation to it

I'm fine with plot devices as long as they aren't complete a*** pulls. Like if we didn't know whis could rewind time and the first time we learn about it is at the end of the movie. That would be horrible

Stuff like that bothers me

Not a real spoiler. Anyone heard of Potara earrings? That's a pretty useless MacGuffin.

I don't understand how worthless is being used in this context. I'd have thought that it meant something added to the story that didn't actually change anything and didn't need to be there. A good example occurs late in Naruto

light manga spoilers

But some stuff like "character being involved in events they shouldn't have been" isn't worthless. Poorly executed yes but the reveal of those things almost always drives the plot forward in some way, which is what a plot device is supposed to do.

Vegeta's character development being erased every time the story needs an issue. You need some sort of idiotic decision made? Just retcon Vegeta's development so he acts like an idiot once more and screw everyone over. He's the definition of a character plot device.
